Ketosis is when our bodies are running off fats rather than carbs and being in this state can yield some amazing results including a rapid weight loss although it takes time for our brain and our bodies to adjust.

How does the ketogenic diet cause rapid weight loss?

 

Our bodies get the energy it needs from carbs and insulin. Our bodies produce insulin when we eat and our pancreas releases this hormone that allows the sugar from our food to enter our cells for energy. This fat producing process also keeps excess sugar in our blood which tends to lead to obesity with all of its related issues including diabetes. By reducing your carb intake, you are essentially starving your body of sugar, which means that insulin levels drop which causes your body to burn fatty acids for fuel rather than carbohydrates. This is referred to as the ketogenic state.

Why do some people experience side effects?

 

Just as with any other diet, you need to make sure you are doing it right and eating a wide variety of foods and especially include some healthy fats in your diet if you want to reap the benefits of ketosis. You also need to stick with it long enough for your body to become proficient at burning fat for energy, which can take 1-3 weeks for some people. You may have stomach pains, dizziness, headaches, or even hunger pains. These side effects should resolve over time but if they persist or become unbearable then it is time to stop the diet.
