The US has seen an enormous increase in the rate of obesity over the last few decades. If you're reading this, chances are that you are one of us and want to change things for the better. This blog will go over 4 easy health and fitness tips that will help get you started on your journey!
1) Get in a routine -
Having a routine is always the most efficient way to stay active and healthy because it requires less motivation than trying to stay on top of things in between every workout. It can be helpful to write out or plan ahead when possible. Having a routine includes working out and doing activities to keep your metabolism active and to stay at a healthy weight.
A simple routine would be:
- Workout: Work out 3-5x a week for 45 minutes or more.
- Eat/Drink: Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day with no snacks in between. Also drink 1 glass of water for every 2 meals.
A lot of this is just common sense but it does help to have a plan in place.
2) Make your own food choices -
It can be difficult to eat healthy when you don't know what you are eating. I suggest sticking with lean meats and fresh vegetables as much as possible because they are the healthiest options available at the moment. Meal prepping is also a great way to make your own choices because it ensures that you will not be tempted by unhealthy options. I typically eat chicken breast, brown rice, asparagus, and broccoli every day when I'm meal prepping. This is very easy to stick too and doesn't take a lot of time if you prepare the ingredients in bulk.
3) Exercise on your terms -
I'm aware that this is the third tip in a row that has to do with exercise but there is good reason behind it. There are a lot of ways to stay active and healthy, often times exercise alone isn't enough so you should find other ways to fit activity into your life. The number one way to stay healthy and to avoid getting sick, is to get enough sleep. Although it's not as fun as staying up late and partying, it works so it should be prioritized.
I also believe that exercise should be on your terms. If you can do more than 15 minutes of work out at a time, then you are doing well! Not everyone has the time or motivation to go for a long run or daily workout, but we still want to stay active and healthy. So I recommend finding other ways that work for you like taking walks with friends, going on long bike rides when the weather is nice, etc...
4) Asking for help can help!
Sometimes it is helpful to ask for help. It doesn't have to be a huge thing, it can be as little as a friend or family member telling you that you could use a hand getting started in your new routine. Even if you don't think you need it, someone's opinion can often change your perspective and make you think to try something new!
